Community Leaders of Owukpa district, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State converged on Jos, Plateau State capital on Saturday, 8th of July, 2017 to brainstorm and restore peace and harmony over the district’s Community Development Association which was recently fractionalized as a result of leadership struggles and other divisive tendencies.

Led by the Community’s National Leader, Chief Matthias Abutu, the team which included the National President of the Association, Chief Nicholas Ejugwu, Chairman of the community’s Abuja Contact Group, Eng. Sunday Ochai, the Public Relations Officer, Godwin Ochigbo C. and General Secretary, Gabriel Agene overwhelmed the well attended reconciliatory gathering with the intensity of their personal commitment to the socioeconomic progress of Owukpa land and her people where ever they live. The colloquial speed of light with which the team reacted to the onset of the crisis, mobilizing the hierarchy of the community and association, then arriving Jos even before the hardcopies of the crisis’ documents reached their tables surprised all members who welcomed them.

During the extensive brainstorming, the future economic progress of members and the homeland were emphasized as the core factors that must drive all leadership ambitions of any Owukpa man anywhere in the world, including Plateau state. Members were reminded of the proverbial fragility of the single broomstick as against its cleaning strength when joined together by a multitude of others, driving home the point that all Owukpa sons and daughter’s must remain united even under any provocations.

On the specific issues that constituted the causative elements of the dispute which brought them to Jos, the Team decided that the cultural norms of Owukpa land must, at all times, be at the fore-fronts in the minds and pages of the constitutions of all Owukpa-based associations anywhere they exist. In that light, some constitutional disconnections with Owukpa norms and culture were identified in the constitution of ODA, Plateau branch and their immediate corrections directed. The aggrieved Family Branch were also directed to be large-hearted and forgiving when their previously erring sons tender necessary apologies and thereafter include them in all primary elections they would hold in the future. It was also decided that henceforth, the family whose turn it is to occupy any particular post must be allowed to produce the two candidates, possibly through a primary election, without the interference of the other brother-family. This, according to them will promote peace and antecedental discipline amongst prospective leaders.

Applause and unceasing praises for the impartiality that were evident in the decisions of the Peace Ambassadors were abundantly expressed and prayers offered for their safe trips to their homes across Nigeria.
